Onion & Pepper Cheese Straws

This is just the twin to my garlic cheese twists. They are made out of puff pastry instead of all purpose flour as was the case with the garlic cheese twists.

Do you know what I call puff pastry? Flaky layers of scrumptiousness. If you like flaky snacks, then rest assured you will like these yummy snacks.

But what is puff pastry without what goes into it? I know right, this is where it gets cheesy. I actually mean the snack, not me :). Loads of cheese goes into the making of these savoury chops. I used cheddar cheese and Parmigiano Reggiano. Feel free to experiment. For spices, you can use whatever works for you as well. After all, it is your creation. Check out what I used below.

My husband decided that he likes these more than its twin. I think they are from the same mum, both lovely but different personalities :). Okay, are we still talking about cheese twists or straws? Guess so!

Enough gist.

WHAT YOU NEED

320g puff pastry, cold but not frozen

60g Cheddar cheese, grated

30g Parmigiano Reggiano, grated

1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp black pepper or cayenne powder

2 tsp dry chopped onions

WHAT TO DO

Pre-heat your oven to 200 C.

Spread the puff pastry sheet out and first brush the surface with the olive oil and sweet chilli sauce. Next, sprinkle on the grated Cheddar cheese and Parmigiano Reggiano, topped with the black pepper and dry chopped onions.

Press down with your palms and gently but quickly flip one side over the other side, Press down firmly again. Cut into strips lengthways and twist.

Sprinkle with some more grated cheese. This is totally optional. It just makes them extra cheesy and who doesn’t want that, eh? 🙂

Bake in the oven for about 15-20 mins. depending on how crisp and brown you want them and how thinly you’ve cut them. Make sure you watch them closely, though!

Once done, let them cool down. Serve them alone or with your favourite dips.

TIP – Try leaving the wrapping paper on the puff pastry on as this will aid you to achieve a better flip.

Hope you try and enjoy it.

Have a lovely weekend!
